The Story of Dilip

The boy and the emerald

An old building in a quarter of Jaipur, a cutting workshop inside. But what is a boy of twelve doing there? It was his own choice. At twelve, Dilip decided to start working to support his family. He joins as an apprentice and learns the emerald. Ten years at the wheel, on emerald alone: the stone is too fragile for the machine, and is held with bare fingers.

The first workshop was not on any map. You found it by asking for the pigeon sellers at Kabootar Chowk, the small square by Tripolia Gate, then turning left before the gate, into the maze of Jaleb Chowk.

One room, no signboard: two cutting wheels, a polishing machine, a wooden stool, light from the doorway. Work began before the pigeons were fed and ended after the gate lamps were lit.

Clients left parcels of rough emerald and came back days later for stones that caught the light differently. Word travelled by hand, never by advertisement.

At twenty-two, his own workshop: cutting and polishing precious and fine stones. There he begins to pass on the craft: over a hundred people learn the lapidary's art from him.

  • 1994The first piece

In 1994, the first piece was made: a single silver ring, hammered and finished entirely by hand. No machinery. No shortcuts. Just silver, fire, and intent.

That ring became the founding principle. Every creation since has followed the same discipline: 100% handmade, solid brass and bronze, shaped slowly by hand, designed to be worn permanently. It is the signature of the House of Dilip Jindal Paris.

At twenty-three, the lapidary becomes a jeweler. He turns to natural semi-precious stones, for their colors, and for the inclusions that sign each stone.
